Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005

Iceland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "If I Had Your Love", written by Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson and Vignir Snær Vigfússon, Linda Thompson and Selma Björnsdóttir. The song was performed by Selma who previously represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, where she placed second in the final of the competition with the song "All Out of Luck".

Before Eurovision

Internal selection

RÚV announced that the Icelandic entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 would be selected internally.[1] On 7 February 2005, 1999 Eurovision Song Contest runner-up Selma who previously represented Iceland with the song "All Out of Luck" announced that she had been approached by the broadcaster but a final decision was yet to be made.[2] Selma was confirmed as the Icelandic representative for the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest on 8 February 2005 during the RÚV evening news broadcast. During her interview on the evening news broadcast, Selma stated that the Icelandic entry would be selected in cooperation with Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson who previously composed her 1999 entry.[3]

On 3 March 2005, RÚV announced that Selma would be performing the song "If I Had Your Love", composed by Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson and Vignir Snær Vigfússon with lyrics by Linda Thompson and Selma herself, at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. The song was presented to the public along with the release of the official music video on 19 March 2005 during the television programme Laugardagskvöld með Gísla Marteini.[4]

At Eurovision

Because Iceland placed 19th at the 2004 contest, Selma was forced to compete in the Eurovision semi-final, she performed 10th following Netherlands and preceding the Belgium came 16th with 52 points failing to qualify to the Grand Final.[5]

The spokesperson who revealed Iceland's votes for other countries was RUV host and Miss Iceland 2003 winner Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir.[6]
