He became a member of the Bundestag after the 2017 German federal election for Saxony.[2] He was a member of Der Flügel, the extremist wing of the Alternative for Germany.[3] This led to the Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz Sachsen classifying him as a far-right extremist.[3]
Maier lost his seat in the 2021 German federal election.[2]
