Khatik
The Khatik (Hindi: खटीक, Urdu: کھٹیک), are an ethnic tribe found in the Indian subcontinent, mainly modern-day India, Pakistan and Nepal. They are one of the most widespread community in South Asia.Indian Khatik have a population of approximately 2.4 millions and are located mainly in New Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

History
Origin
The Khatik are widely distributed community in North India, and each Khatik group, has its own origin believe. According to Crooke, Khatik is cultivating, labouring and vegetable selling caste found all over the province.[3] Russel (Vol. III, 1916, p. 453)[4] and Risley (Vol. I, 1891, pt. 47)[5] both agree in calling them a cultivating and vegetable selling caste.
Inter-community relations and social status
According to other caste Hindus, the Khatiks were not untouchables and did not suffer social disabilities.[6] In the past, they were allowed to draw water from the wells of upper caste Hindus or one common village well. For instance, in village Kazidewar they drew water from a well owned by the Pradhan of the village who belong to Kayastha community.[6] They used metal vessels as well as earthen pitchers for drawing water from the well.
Religion
- Hindu khatik - Durbalnath ji is considered as"kulguru" of Hindu Khatik community mostly in north india.Khatik used to sacrifice goat infront of Hindu devi Kaali.
Khatik follow Hindu religion historically, but now they are also found in Islam and Jainism for the following reason:-
- Muslim Khatik - Mughal ruler Aurangzeb started conversation Hindu into Islam forcefully, that time large number of Hindu Khatik converted into Islam, now they are identified as Muslim Khatik and broadly found in Maharastra. Presently they are united under leadership of Haji Arfat Shaikh, president of the Maharashta State Muslim Khatik Samaj
- Veerwal Khatik - Khatik in Rajasthan inspired by Jain guru and adopted jainism and terned Veerwal and now identified as Veerwal Khatik.
Etymology
Khatik is derived from the Sanskrit (Indic ancient language) word, "Khatik" means " killer or Hunter" and Hindi word "Khatt" Means immediate killing. they Believes that they are Descendants of King Khatwang Of Ishwaku Vansh (Lord Ram's Ancestor). [3]
Legal status

Khatik identified as Scheduled Caste in some states of India while they are OBC status in Many states.[7]
Khatiks are identified as Other Backward Class in India's state of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and schedule castes in Uttarpradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh .[8]
Political involvement
Khatik Mahasangh founded by Pratap Singh on 1 March 2012, is the leading organization in the Khatik community which influence the politics and raise voice of not only Khatik community but all Dalit on national level. Late Shri Jagganath Pahadiya Ji was Former CM of Rajasthan and Former Rajpal of Haryana, Uttarpradesh and Bihar. Virendra Kumar Khatik is an Indian politician serving as the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. He is a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from Tikamgarh. He is an MP since 1996 and was a member in the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha.He was chosen as the Pro-tem speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha in June 2019.Manoj Rajoria is an indian politician and a member of parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha from Karauli-Dholpur (Lok Sabha constituency), Rajasthan. Vinod Kumar Sonkar He is currently (2014 & 2019) the Member of parliament from Kaushambi (Lok Sabha constituency) he is also the National Secretary of BJP and the current chairperson of parliamentary committee on Ethics.Udit Raj He was a Member of Parliament between 2014 to 2019 in the Lok Sabha, representing the North West Delhi. Raj is also the National Chairman of the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organizations.Krupal Balaji Tumane is a politician from Nagpur who is re-Elected in 17th Lok Sabha & was member of the 16th Lok Sabha of India. Sajjan Singh Verma a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India and represented the Dewas constituency of Madhya Pradesh. He is national president of Akhil Bhartiya Khatik Samaj. Bhola Singh May, 2019:Elected to 17th Lok Sabha May, 2014: Elected to 16th Lok Sabha 1 Sep. 2014 onwards:Member, Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution; Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.Neelam Sonkar She contested Indian general elections 2014 from Lalganj Seat of Uttar Pradesh as candidate to enter in 16th Lok Sabha.Bizay Sonkar Shastri He was elected to Lok Sabha from Saidpur in 1998 elections and was subsequently chosen as the Chairman of ST/SC Commission (Government of India). In 2004, he was appointed as the Vice-chairman of National SC/ST front (BJP) and was elected as the National Executive Member of Bharatiya Janata Party in 2008.Rajnath Sonkar Shastri is an Indian politician. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India from the Saidpur.Munshi Rampal is an Indian senior politician and has been Member of Parliament. He is national president of Akhil Bhartiya Khatik Samaj.Anil Firojiya he was elected as the Member of Parliament from Ujjain. From 24 July 2019 onwards, he is a member of the Committee on Welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and the Consultative Committee, Ministry of External Affairs since 13 September 2019. Shankar Lal Khatik He won the 1989 general election of India from the Sagar Lok Sabha constituency. He was a member of the Indian 9th Lok Sabha. Khatiks are actively participate in politics and they are not dependent on single party but they are distributed in various political party as per their belief & interest.[7] Many social institutions have been created for the purpose of political participation by the Khatik caste people, but the Akhil Bharatiya Khatik Samaj is the oldest and largest social organization which puts pressure on the political parties to ensure the participation of Khatik cast in the politics.
Hindu Khatik people are now taking interest to create stronger identity of Khatik community, so they have started many organisations for the upliftment of Khatiks. The notable Khatik organisations are:

Subdivisions
Hindu Khatik caste has divided into various subgroups based on their livelihood. These include: (1) Suryavanshi- they claim to be son of Surya (Sun) and Raja Khatwang (grandfather of Lord Rama). they proudly drive tanga for livlihood. they are widely spread in Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh. (2) Sonkar - they started keeping pig animal to save their family from mughal army. (3) Suryavanshi Aare Katika or Are Katika - they claim to be Aare Brahmin and lived kingdom of Veer Shivaji in Maharashtra. (4) Chak (Chik, Chikwa) - they used to sell meat make drum. (5) Dhangar - they take care of animals who produce milk. (6) Kalal - they also involved in meat profession. (7) Rangiya - they used to colour goat and deer skin to sell. (8) Mewafarosh - they used to sell fruits and dry-fruits.
