History

Lutana was gazetted as a locality in 1961.[2]

It was originally built by Electrolytic Zinc (the then operator of the Risdon Zinc Works)[3] as homes for its employees at the nearby zinc works.[4]

Lutana is the aboriginal word for moon.[5]

The homes were later sold off and are now privately owned.

The zinc works at Lutana, is the largest exporter in Tasmania, generating 2.5% of the state's GDP. It produces over 250000 tons of zinc per year.[6]

Geography

The waters of the River Derwent and New Town Bay form the north-eastern to south-eastern boundaries.[7]

Road infrastructure

National Route 1 (Brooker Highway) passes to the south-west, and several roads provide access to the locality.[2][8]
