M. Govardhana Rao

M. Govardhana Rao was an Indian politician, freedom fighter and former member of Karnataka legislative Council.[1][2] He was a fighter in the struggle for freedom and was detained in jail at Mercara during the 1920-22 movement.[3] After independence, he was in charge of publicity and propaganda of the K.P.C.C. and D.C.C.[4]

Early life
  • General Manager, the United Karnataka Insurance Co., Ltd. ; one- of the founders and administrators of Kalandhi Co-operative Society, Ltd., Ashwathpur, S.K.
  • Associated with several institutions established for the agricultural and rural rebuild of Karnataka such as Karnataka Improved Variety Cotton Growers' Association of Annigeri.[4]
  • Imparted Primary Education to Harijans during 1922–30 in Pandit Taranathaji's Premayatana Ashram; his co-operation and unstinted efforts with Sri S. M. Patil of Saswihalli, Navalgund Taluk, for rural development in parts, of Annigeri Circle cannot be forgotten.[4]
  • Taken active part in the upliftment of rural areas ; has also worked with Sri G. V. Hallikeri in the sphere of Khadi and Village Industries to the best of his ability.
  • Vast experience of the working of Local Self-Government institutions; Member, Dharwad Municipal Borough, for a number of years.[4]
  • Initiated for the formation of "Nadahahba" festival 30 years ago; was Honorary Secretary, Vijayanagar 6th Centenary Celebration in 1936.[4]

  4. Chairman, Dharwar Municipal School Board, for about 6 years; was in charge of the Training Class to impart training to Secretaries of Village Panchayats in Dharwar District for about 3 months.[4]
  5. Honorary Secretary, Karnataka Vidya Vardhaka Sangha; was Honorary Secretary, Karnataka Regional Library, for two terms.[4]
  6. President, Vani Vilas Higher Elementary School of Aswathapur.[4]
  7. Member, Kannada Sahitya Parishad.[4]
  8. Pradyapak in the Bhuvanendra Sanskrit College, Karkala.[4]
