Osthe

Osthe (The Best) is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film directed by S. Dharani, a remake of the 2010 Bollywood film Dabangg. Produced by Balaji Real Media and distributed by Reliance Entertainment, the film was launched at AVM Studios in Chennai in May 2011; principal photography began in Mysore the following month. Its music was composed by Sai Thaman, with cinematography by Gopinath and editing by V. T. Vijayan. The film was released worldwide on 8 December 2011 to generally-mixed reviews from critics, and became a lukewarm box-office hit.[3][4] Its Telugu-dubbed version was released as Thimmiri in April 2015.[5]

Plot

"Osthi" Velan, a stylish police officer, is the inspector of Kattupakkam in Tirunelveli district. His subordinates are Selva, Maasaana Moorthi, Saravan, and a constable played by Vaiyapuri. Corrupt politician Boxer Daniel wants to win an election by any means necessary, and Osthe becomes his nemesis. Osthe and his half-brother, Balan, have a love-hate relationship. His mother tries to ensure that they get along, but his father sides with Balan.

Osthe falls in love with Neduvali, the daughter of a local alcoholic. When his mother dies, he promises her that he will take care of Balan. Boxer decides to take Osthe on, and Balan conspires with the politician. In a man-to-man fight he is killed by Osthe.

Casting

After considering Bollywood actresses Sonakshi Sinha and Sonam Kapoor,[8] Bengali actress Richa Gangopadhyay (who had starred in a number of Telugu films) was cast as Osthe's love interest.[9] Jithan Ramesh was cast as Balan, and Sonu Sood reprised his role in the original film.[10] Reports that Madhu Shalini had been signed to play Balan's girlfriend were dismissed by Silambarasan, who said that Saranya Mohan was cast in the role.[11] Producer-turned-actor VTV Ganesh, after collaborations with Silambarasan in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Vaanam was signed to play Nirmala's father (played by Mahesh Manjrekar in the original film).[12] The production team took some time to finalise the actress for the film's item number. Nayantara, Shriya Saran,[13] Zarine Khan,[14] Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu,[15] Deepika Padukone,[16] Mallika Sherawat and Vidya Balan[17] were reportedly considered, and Sherawat was eventually cast.[18]

Filming

The project was launched with a pooja at AVM Productions in Chennai on 10 May 2011,[19] and filming began on 26 June in Mysore.[20] Nearly all of the film was shot in and around Mysore in a single shooting schedule,[21][22] which was finished by mid-August.[23] Silambarasan began a fitness regime with workouts at the gym,[24] unlike Salman Khan (who went on a special diet to lose his six-pack abs).[25] The film's final shooting schedule was a song filmed in Dubai.[26] Mallika Sherawat shot the item number "Kalasala" in late September and the first week of October in Chennai.[27]

Osthe's soundtrack album and background score were composed by S. Thaman in his first collaboration with Silambarasan and Dharani, instead of Dharani's usual collaboration with Vidyasagar (who had composed the music for his previous films). Silambarasan said that composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, with whom he usually collaborates, had suggested signing Thaman as music director.[28] The music rights were acquired by Sony Music.[29] The soundtrack was initially planned to be released on 6 October 2011 (coinciding with Vijayadashami),[30] but the release ceremony was held on 28 October[31] in Chennai. The event was attended by the film's cast and crew, and other celebrities.[32] Vijay, who had worked with Dharani in Ghilli (2004) and Kuruvi (2008), was the guest of honour and unveiled the film's sountrack CD.[33]

The soundtrack album contains five songs, with lyrics by Vaali and Yugabharathi; Silambarasan wrote the lyrics for "Pondaati". About the song, Silambarasan said that it revolves around a "husband's praise for his wife."[34] "Pondaati" and "Neduvaali" (sung by Rahul Nambiar and Mahathi) are reminiscent of Thaman's compositions for the Telugu film Mirapakaay (2011), and "Kalasala" resembles the song "Munni Badnaam Hui" from Mirapakaay.[29] Although Shruti Haasan was rumoured to have sung "Kalasala",[35] veteran singer L. R. Eswari provided the vocal.[36] Elements of "Kalasala Kalasala" were sampled in "Don't Sell Out" by rapper Tinie Tempah.[37]

The soundtrack received mainly-positive reviews from music critics, and was commercially successful. P. G. Devi of Behindwoods rated the album three out of five and said, "Osthi lives up to its huge expectations with generous mass entertainers like 'Kalasala Kalasala', 'Pondatti' and 'Neduvaali'. It will be a top musical grosser, alluring listeners with its hits".[38] Prakash Upadhyaya of Oneindia.in praised Thaman's musical sense and called the soundtrack "Simbu's Diwali treat".[39] Indiaglitz also gave the soundtrack a positive review: "'Kalasala' the Tamil equivalent of Bollywood chartbuster 'Munni' fulfills all expectations, and even exceeds at some places. If your choice is an album that is a collection of mass numbers, there can't be better pick than Osthi. Go and grab it".[40] Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff praised the soundtrack's "mildly appealing combination of masala beats", rating it 2.5 out of five.[41]

Release

The film's satellite rights were secured by Sun TV for 4.50 crore (US$600,000). Osthe was released on 8 December 2011, which coincided with Karthikai Deepam. The film, released on over 110 screens overseas,[42] was the largest-ever overseas release in Silambarasan's career; the actor called it the "biggest action film that he has done so far".[43]

Osthe opened to mixed reviews. A New Indian Express reviewer said, "Unfortunately it's unable to recreate the same magic of the earlier version, the film a passable routine masala entertainer" and the film lacked the punch in original.[46] A Deccan Chronicle reviewer gave the film three stars and said, "Osthe is worth watching once."[45] Malathi Rangarajan of thehindu.com said, "If Dabangg could make it, Osthe should! And if Salman could do it, so can STR."[47] Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff rated the film two out of five: "Osthe lacks the magic that made Dabangg work."[44] According to an IndiaGlitz.com reviewer, "Osthe ends up as an entertainer."[48] Behindwoods rated the film 2.5 out of five, calling it entertaining;[49] Sify also called it a "time-pass entertainer."[50] Rohit Ramachandran of Nowrunning.com rated the film two out of five, however, calling it "a snoozefest."[51]

Box office

Osthi earned 3 crore worldwide on its opening day,[52] and was reported as having a "flying start at the box office".[53] Its total worldwide gross was 18 crore (US$2.4 million). The film was declared an average hit at the box office, and completed its 50-day run. Thimmiri, the Telugu-dubbed version, could not surpass the popularity of Gabbar Singh (the original Telugu version).
