History

Shafie Apdal, founder and current President

The party formed an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 2018 general election. its President Shafie Apdal promised that the party would be represented within the federal cabinet if Pakatan Harapan was elected to power.[1][6] adding that through the electoral pact they will "only work together, not joining the PH pact as their party will only contest in Sabah".[7] The party became part of the ruling bloc and federal government when PH won the 2018 general election.

Duringn the 2020 Sabah state election, the state ruling party was defeated by the informal Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state opposition coalition consisting of the federal ruling Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional and United Sabah Party. Warisan Sabah failed to secure a simple majority to retain the state power, allowing the GRS coalition to form a new state government.[8]

Following the 2020 election, Warisan became the largest opposition party of the State Legislative Assembly and the Chief Minister before state election and its President Shafie Apdal became the new state Leader of the Opposition after being ousted in the state election. On 12 December 2020, Shafie announced the reorientation of the party as a national party instead of state party with a call towards national unity as the way forward and approval of the spread of its wings to Peninsular Malaysia as the party wants East Malaysia to join and become part of the decision-making consideration for the nation. Following this announcement, the party was set to be renamed the Malaysian Heritage Party (Parti Warisan Malaysia),[9][10] but was never happened.

Warisan's expansion to the Peninsular Malaysia was dated on 17 December 2021, which was announced almost one year later in late November 2021 by Shafie. He stated that the party will focus on places that they stand a chance of making an impact. The party will also collaborate with Muda after the expansion. On the same occasion, Shafie also revealed that a Peninsular Malaysian assemblyperson will be joining the party.[11]

Mr Shafie said that WARISAN was not contesting in Peninsular Malaysia, but is ready to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH), without a pact, at the national level. We are a multi-racial party, we don't want to follow the PH coalition style in Peninsular Malaysia. When they form the government in Putrajaya, we will have ministers in the federal cabinet from WARISAN and the WARISAN (Sabah state) government will also have ministers from PH. Speaking to more than 5,000 party members at the assembly with the theme "In God We Trust, Change We Must", he urged all of them to prepare for the election.
