Sus, Azerbaijan

Sus (Armenian: Սուս, romanized: Sows) is a village near Zabux de jure in the Lachin District of Azerbaijan. Located within the strategic Lachin corridor, which connects Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, it is under the supervision of the Russian peacekeeping force following the ceasefire agreement, ending the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.

According to the administrative division of Azerbaijan, the village forms an administrative unit together with the villages of Zabux (Aghavno), Bəylik and Qızılca (Urmia) .[2]

According to the administrative division of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, along with Sus proper, the community also includes the villages of Aşağı Sus (Nerkin Sus), Mollalar (Gihut) and Qızılca (Urmia).[3]

Geography

Sus sits on the Hakari (Aghavno) river, opposite of Aşağı Sus (Nerkin Sus). It is 1.8km (1.1mi) from Aşağı Sus (Nerkin Sus), 3.1km (1.9mi) from Lachin (Berdzor), 4.8km (3.0mi) from Zabux (Aghavno), 8.4km (5.2mi) from Tegh, Armenia, 19.6km (12.2mi) from Goris, Armenia, and 30.9km (19.2mi) from Khankendi (Stepanakert). At its closest, the Armenian border is 4.6km (2.9mi) away.

Demographics

The village had 30 inhabitants in 2005,[4] and 26 inhabitants in 2015.[5] Following the 2020 ceasefire, only around 200 Armenians remained in the Lachin corridor, with 30 of them being in Sus.[1]
