During the Soviet period, the village was a part of the Mardakert District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.
Demographics
According to the "Statistical Data on the Population of the Transcaucasian Territory, Extracted from Family Lists of 1886" (Russian: Свода статистических данных о населении Закавказского края, извлеченных из посемейных списков 1886 года), the village of Umudlu had 241 Tatar inhabitants (i.e. modern Azerbaijanis). Only 52 of these Azerbaijanis belonged to the upper Muslim class.[3]
In 1912, 362 people lived in the village.[4] This number reduced to 304 by 1921. In both censuses, the entire population was ethnic Azerbaijanis.[5]
The village also kept an Azerbaijani majority during Soviet years.[6] All of the inhabitants of the village were forcibly expulsed by Armenian forces in February 1992 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh war.[7] It was subsequently settled by Armenians and had 482 inhabitants in 2005.[8]
