Choti Sarrdaarni

Choti Sarrdaarni (transl.Little Sarrdaarni) is an Indian Hindi-Punjabi romantic drama television series. Produced by Cockcrow and Shaika Entertainment, it premiered on 1 July 2019 on Colors TV. It stars Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia and Mahir Pandhi in lead roles of Seher and Rajveer respectively.

Plot

Carefree and bubbly Meher Kaur Dhillon falls in love with Manav Sharma, an orphan, who dreams to become an IAS Officer but works on a local Dhaba. Meher gets pregnant with his child. Her mother, Kulwant Kaur Dhillon who is the Sarpanch of the village, gets furious by listening to Meher's pregnancy and refuses to accept Manav for being financially unstable and stabs him at his back and throws him down in the river. To become a MLA, she forces Meher to marry a widower, Sarabjeet "Sarab" Singh Gill a very well–connected widower, the president ofruling party in Amritsar who has a 5-year-old son named Paramjeet "Param" Singh Gill. Meher marries Sarab to save her unborn child from Kulwant.

Meher reveals her pregnancy to Sarab who settles her in Serbia, as they and Param visit Serbia with a new identity. But accused of killing Meher, Sarab is taken to India. Meher saves him. He accepts her child as his own. The family celebrates Meher's pregnancy. Sarab's sister, Harleen finds out the baby is not Sarab's and blames Meher.

Meher and Sarab start having feelings for each other. Meher feels that she is in love with Sarab and her destroys her memories with Manav. Later, she delivers a son and names him Karanjeet "Karan" Singh Gill/Sharma. Sarab's half-sister, Dr. Aditi Bedi enters to take revenge due to her toxic past. Alive but having memory loss, Manav returns as CBI officer Vikram Diwan who is already in love with Aditi. Meher and Sarab assume him as Manav's lookalike. He marries Aditi and regains his memory. Shocked seeing Meher married, he asks Meher to go with him but Meher betrays him badly and breaks his heart by her decision to stay with Sarab. Manav learns Karan is his son; he hands over him to Sarab, hence moving with Aditi. Meher is accused of killing her brother, Jagga, and gets jailed. Sarab fails to save her. Kulwant disowns Meher.

5 years later

Meher now known as Sirat, lives in Kashmir with her daughter, Seher. Sarab is back to India with Harleen and Karan. Param is still in London. It's revealed Tarkash, the Gills' accountant killed Jagga and trapped Meher into this. She is released after Tarkash's wife, Arati proves it who was often beated by Tarkash. Karan visits Kashmir for field trip and meets Meher who finds out he is Karan.

Sarab comes there to pick up him. Meher hides her identity and Param returns to India as Seher comes to Gill mansion. Sarab learns Sirat is Meher and Seher is their daughter. He meets Meher after years but faces an accident planned by Kulwant. Meher returns to prove her innocence, but leaves for some work. Kulwant finds out Meher is not Jagga's murderer and regrets.

Meher's friend, Sandhya tells Sarab that IG officer Rajan has kidnapped Meher. Rajan burns her alive. Alive, Meher returns to expose Rajan and unites with Sarab, as Sandhya marries Sameer. Sarab and Meher remarry and expose Kulwant. Sarab learns Meher's father, Trilochan is alive. Kulwant apologizes for her mistakes. Later sadly, Sarab and Meher die in an accident.

16 years later

Param, Karan and Seher are grown up. Strong-willed, Seher lives in Canada and befriends Rajveer Singh Babbar, who falls in love with her but is heartbroken when she introduces him to her fiancé, Kunal Malhotra. Param and Karan arrive in Canada. Rajveer saves them from goons. Impressed with him, Param and Karan think him suitable for Seher.

Soon they get to know Kunal and Seher's love and approve their marriage owing. Thus their engagement is fixed. Rajveer returns to Amritsar. His sister, Harshdeep decides to break the alliance. Seher, Param and Karan return to India. A fire breaks out in their chemical factory as planned by Harshdeep but Rajveer saves them. Unaware it is him, Seher determines to find the savior. But this fire leads to Param and Karan in a case that may lead to life time imprisonment but hide it from Seher. Anurita enters the Gill Mansion guised as a wedding planner on Harshdeep's orders to keep a watch on the activities. On the engagement day, an ecstatic Seher waits for Kunal to return from Canada. Elsewhere, Anurita advises Param and Karan to meet Harshdeep , Punjab's CM regarding their case. Harshdeep proposes Rajveer and Seher's alliance in exchange of her help in the case. But Param and Karan refuse to compromise with Seher's love leaving Harshdeep infuriated. As a result she slyly kidnaps Kunal at the Amritsar airport on the engagement day and blackmails him to kill Seher if he doesn't leave her. Thus, Kunal makes the Gills believe that he never wanted to marry Seher and thus did not arrive in Amritsar for the engagement. But Seher refuses to believe this and determines to find the truth. Harshdeep asks Param and Karan to reconsider her proposal. Seher soon finds that Kunal landed in Amritsar. Anurita emotionally traps Seher and she decides to meet Babbar family. Elsewhere, Rajveer also decides to meet the girl on Harshdeep's insistence unknown that she is Seher.

Seher is shocked to know that Rajveer is the one. She is surprised to know the Rajveer is CM's brother who saved her life. Soon, their alliance is fixed. Rajveer decides to help Seher find Kunal. They also decide her to continue this marriage drama until the case is closed. Both Seher and Rajveer find that Kunal had been kidnapped and meet him on their Mehendi after paying 10 crore ransom. But they are shocked to know that Kunal is the mastermind behind the kidnapping and he did it all for money, while in actual Kunal is blackmailed by Harshdeep to say all this. A devastated Seher tells the truth to Param and Karan leaving them shocked. She decided to tell the truth to Harshdeep and break the alliance but is manipulated by her and thus she decides to marry Rajveer. Elsewhere, Kunal misunderstands that it was Rajveer behind all this unknown that it was all Harshdeep's plan. Rajveer and Seher marry in a grand ceremony and Seher is welcomed in the family. Later Dida recalls her son Sonu which already died before birth and dida wants Rajveer to give his first child to her as he promised Harshdeep in the past that he will give his first child to her. Many days after, Harshdeep reminds Rajveer of his promise. Seher didn't accept to give his baby to anyone but then she accepts and decides to get baby through artificial insemination.

Later Seher starts having feelings for Rajveer and feels that she is in love with Rajveer and decides to tell her love to him. Many days later Seher and Rajveer both decide to confess their love to each other on the same day (on Rajveer's birthday) but fails to do so. On the same day Dida decides to get Seher and Rajveer closer to each other. Via an injection they get closer to each other and share many romantic moments but forgets everything on the next day. On the next day Kulwant Kaur reaches Babbar Mansion as Badi B requests her to help Seher. She acts like she lost her memory, so she calls Seher as Meher and Rajveer as Sarab. Only Ranna, Bittu, and Harshdeep knows that Kulwant is not crazy and has went there to help Seher. Kulwant finds a proof against Harshdeep and decides to tell everything to Seher and Rajveer. But Harshdeep decides to murder Kulwant. But Seher saves her and Kulwant tells Harshdeep's truth to Seher. Seher also learns about Kunal's death and then decides to get Harshdeep arrested. But Rajveer takes the allegation on himself and then Harshdeep regrets on her actions. Later Seher gets pregnant with Rajveer's baby and decides to tell him that she is pregnant but fails to do so. Later Kulwant decides to get Seher to Jammu so that she can be happy but Seher's plane get hijacked. Then Harshdeep and Rajveer gets to know that Seher's plane gets hijacked. Later the hijackers/goons/terrorists kill Pawan (the boy who was going to Dubai for his mother's operation). Everyone misunderstands that because of Seher everything happened. Then the plane lands at Delhi and Rajveer decides to go to Delhi to save Seher. Then Rajveer reaches at Delhi Airport. Then Rajveer finally saves Seher. They both get hospitalized and Seher loses her unborn child.

Then Rajveer gets released from the jail but for Seher's happiness, he acted like he murdered Kunal and ruined Seher's life. He breaks all his ties with Harshdeep. Later Seher confesses her love to Rajveer but Rajveer denied to accept her love and decides to break his all ties with her also. He signs the divorce papers but Seher wanted to give him another chance. In the court the judge said that Seher and Rajveer should be living with each other for 6 months. And Seher decides to let Rajveer live in her house Gill Mansion. On the next day Rajveer comes to the Gill mansion and behaves rudely with Seher as well as with everybody. Later it reveals that Rajveer was behaving rudely with Seher and everybody because he has Brain Tumor (Cancer) and his problem was increasing that's why he wanted to get hated from everybody. Later Rajveer reveals that he has given the property to Sonali and he will later give the property back to Seher.

Development

Based in Amritsar, Punjab, the series is mainly filmed in Mumbai.[4] In November 2019, the honeymoon sequence was filmed in Serbia.[5]

On 12 September 2019, the filming was held for three hours due to the fight by the workers’ union and Allied Mazdoor Union with producers owing to due in payments.[6]

Filming

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak.[7] The filming resumed after three months and the show started airing again on 13 July 2020.[8][9] During the break, the main actors Rekhi, Ahluwalia and Tak shot a few episodes from their homes during the nationwide lockdown which streamed under Lockdown Special Episodes on Colors TV's official digital platform Voot.[10]

The production was halted for few days from 1 September 2020 after Krishna Soni tested positive for coronavirus.[11]

In February 2021, the show took a 5 years leap and female child artist Kevina Tak, who played as Param, roped to play as Meher and Sarab's daughter, Seher. Child artists Aekam Binjwe, Gaurika Sharma and Dhan Tejas entered to play as Param, Karan and Yuvi after leap.

In July 2021, it was announced that the show would take a leap of 16 years and Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia will play the role of her daughter Seher. It was officially confirmed with the release of the promo showing the 16 year leap with new characters Mahir Pandhi and Varun Toorkey, whereas the exit of Avinesh Rekhi, Anita Raj and other supporting actors.[12] However, Anita Raj and Simran Sachdeva returned as Kulwant Kaur and Harleen Gill in November 2021.

Reception

Critical response

The initial promo based on Gurudwara background of the series created disappointment between the Sikhs and a complaint protesting it was written to the channel by All India Sikh Students Federation as they considered some portrayal hurting their sentiments.[13]

Ratings

In week 41 of 2020, it became the fourth most watched Hindi GEC in urban with 5.281 million impressions.[14]

Crossover

In December 2019, Choti Sarrdaarni and Vidya had a crossover while Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sai Manjrekar appeared to promote their upcoming film Dabangg 3.[17]
