Plot
Set in rural Punjab, the story begins with Maninder who tries to bury his 1 year-old baby daughter Soumya, and his mother Nalini also helps him. The two are caught by Maninder's wife Nimmi who saves Soumya and warns him.
8 years later
Soumya is a quiet and simple girl raised lovingly by Nimmi but hated by Maninder and Nalini. Her sister Surbhi is bubbly and happy-go-lucky, and gets all the love and attention in the family.
15 years later
Grown-up, Soumya is kept away from outside, only living in house with Nimmi and having almost no friends. Surbhi attends her studies and decides to teach a lesson to spoilt troublemaker, Harman. Vengeful, he plans to kidnap her but mistakenly kidnaps Soumya instead. His father Harak Singh orders him to marry Soumya, to avoid social embarrassment.
Nimmi is forced to accept the wedding. Soumya and Harman marry and eventually fall in love. Nimmi tells Soumya's secret to both her and Surbhi. Upon learning she's intersex having a complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, Soumya in shock tries to die but survives. She informs Harman, enraging him. However, they later bond as friends and their love starts to grow.
Harman's mother Preeto learns Soumya's truth and exiles her to kinnar society. Eventually, Harman finds and unites with Soumya. Nimmi dies of a cardiac arrest after being deeply traumatized by Preeto. Harman brings Soumya back to his home. Preeto refuses to accept and blackmails Soumya to get Surbhi and Harman married, as she wants a grandchild. Harman marries Surbhi who later divorces him.
Preeto makes a big revelation that 27 years ago, she was firstly married to Harak's elder brother Nihaal, but after he abandoned her for hermitage, she married Harak and bore him Harman and Raavi. Soumya and Harman adopt an orphan, Aditya. Preeto reveals Soumya's truth to the orphanage who takes Aditya away.
Harak brings Mohini, a dancer to separate Soumya and Harman but falls in love with her and sends Preeto out. Soumya rescues her during this difficult time. Preeto reforms and accepts her. Surbhi marries Varun. Mohini's truth is revealed. Preeto forgives Harak, returning with Harman and Soumya. Later after some other twists Preeto's mother Payal visits them and wants Soumya to get pregnant.
Upon knowing her truth, Payal tries to burn Soumya alive. Harman saves her again, opposing Payal, and leaves the house with her. Varun, Veeran and Balwinder beat and throw them into river. They are hospitalised but lose their memory. With no previous memories, their relation starts off on mutual dislike. Slowly they befriend and again fall in love. Eventually, they recall everything and unite.
Veeran is forgiven for his deeds; Balwinder and Varun are expelled from the family. Pregnant, Surbhi is back from Delhi. Varun confronts and pushes her. Gravely injured, she gives birth to Soham. Before dying, Surbhi hands over Soham's responsibility to Soumya, which she accepts. Varun tries to win Soham's custody, but is defeated after it is proved he killed Surbhi and cannot raise Soham well.
The long-lost Nihaal who was a hermit and now sits on road is seen by Soumya who, unaware that he is Preeto's first husband and is eldest son of Singh family and Harman's father elder brother, brings him into the house. Preeto asks Nihaal to leave. While stepping out, he falls unconscious and dies. Preeto is asked to perform the rituals of a widow despite her marriage with Harak, as Nihaal hadn't divorced her. She develops hate for Soumya as Soumya brought him back.
Due to this and huge tensions in the house, Soumya takes Soham away and searches for work. She gets the job of being caretaker for the paralyzed Vedant Bansal, who is in wheelchair. His father Sunil runs business with Harman and Harak. Vedant earlier dislikes, but later falls in love with Soumya. His leg successfully recovers. He confesses his feelings to Soumya who rejects him.
Vedant falsely frames and gets Harman jailed and blackmails Soumya. Helpless, she agrees to fake marrying him for Harman's freedom. Upon bail, Harman thinks Soumya cheated on him by marrying Vedant (unaware that it is fake). Jealous, he marries Mahi. Vedant's sister Rekha comes from London with her husband Vidhaan and son Rohan.
2 months later
Harman has liver problems due to excessive drinking. Mahi is pregnant. Rekha learns Soumya's truth, and leaves to return to London with Rohan and Vidhaan. They face an accident. Rekha and Vidhaan unfortunately die; Rohan is injured. Bansal family is left depressed. Sunil reveals to Harman that Vedant's marriage is fake, and he'd blackmailed Soumya. Vedant tries to forcefully marry her.
Harman comes to save her. Vedant pushes him off a cliff and is arrested in. Though Harman is presumed dead, Soumya and Preeto couldn't believe he has gone. Soumya adopts Rohan as her nephew. She and Preeto unite. Mahi delivers an intersex child. On learning the truth, she wants to disown her. But Preeto and Soumya stop her. Soumya raises the child. Harak, unaware of her truth, names her Heer.
5 years later
Heer is a bubbly girl brought up by Soumya and Preeto. Vedant escapes for revenge, but is arrested again. Upon learning Heer's truth, Harak loses his temper and intends to kill her but instead shoots Soumya who falls into coma. Harak is arrested. Soumya recovers and reunites with Heer, Soham and Rohan. Maninder finally accepts Soumya.
Varun returns from jail and joins hands with Nalini. They take Soham and poison his mind towards Soumya. Maninder reveals to Soham that Varun killed Surbhi. Soham returns to Soumya and disowns Varun. Nalini also accepts Soumya, sorry for her mistakes. The police frees Harak as he wants to meet Preeto. He says her to send Soumya away if she wants him to accept Heer.
Preeto accepts the condition, gets Harak bailed and asks Soumya to leave the country. She agrees but vows to return after 16 years. The family bids her a tearful goodbye. On the way to the airport, she meets an accident planned by Varun but survives.
16 years later
Heer is now a happy, strong grown-up who is fiercely protected by her brothers Soham and Rohan. On college, Heer becomes friends with Virat and the two fall in love. They elope to a temple and marry. Since their families don't like each other and Heer's family wants to keep Heer's identity truth a secret, they refuse to acknowledge their marriage and keep them separated from each other. The couple remains separated during the lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic.
When Virat and Heer try to commit suicide, both families accept to let them get married. However, on a wedding day, Preeto reveals Heer's identity truth to Virat and he begins to hate her. When asked about the reason he left her, Virat told Heer that he did it because of Soumya's identity truth. Heer decides to move on and continues her studies. Slowly, Virat understands that he can't stay without Heer. He refuses to marry Jharna, the girl that his parents chose for him. Even though Heer's family refuses to accept their union, Virat jumps off the cliff but miraculously survives. Both families decide to let them marry. Virat and Heer remarry, but Virat keeps hiding Heer's identity truth from her. Virat's sister Simran finds out about her pregnancy and hides it, when Heer fakes being pregnant instead of her. Due to Shanno's intervence, Heer's lie gets revealed and Heer faces Virat's family's wrath.
Terrified of society's perceptions, the family asks Simran to abort the unborn baby. However, Heer stops the abortion as she manages to persuade Rohan to marry Simran. During Rohan and Simran's wedding, Shanno reveals Heer's identity truth to Virat's aunt Tajinder who joins hands with Angel, Maharani's disciple. Angel kidnaps Heer and plans to take her to Bangkok.
Parmeet finds Heer but chooses not to save her when Angel discloses that Heer is intersex. In Goa, Heer is sold off to a man called Shergill. Virat rescues her from Shergill and his goons, bringing her back home. Tajinder reveals Heer's identity to the whole family. Finally, Heer also learns about her true gender identity. Devastated, Heer goes to Preeto and confronts her for hiding her true identity. She is angry on her family and Virat, unsure where she really belongs.
Angel manipulates Heer to participate in a kinnar ceremony, leaving Virat shocked. Heer starts her new life in intersex community, where she befriends Shyam, who is secretly in love with her. Shyam and Heer try to make Virat jealous to send him away, pretending that they are in love with each other. Virat doesn't accept defeat and keeps fighting for Heer, thus he abducts her. Kinnars search for Heer and beat Virat. While attempting to save Virat from Angel, Heer falls off a cliff and everyone assumes her to be dead.
6 months later
Heer is alive and has started her new life in another city, working as a babysitter of Akshay's child Kuhu. She lives in a house with family of Akshay, doctor who saved her life. When Akshay's mother learns her identity truth, she throws both Heer and Akshay out of the house. Heer's family finds out that she's alive when Virat's parents Parmeet and Sant Baksh inform them, but the two want Heer to come in Virat's life only so that she can cure his damaged mental state. Even though Heer went away from Virat to help him lead a 'better' life, she understands that Virat needs her and she returns for him. He finally recovers and sends Angel to jail. His childhood friend Isha becomes insane wanting to get him and she tries to kill Heer, but is soon sent to a mental asylum. Heer is ready to undergo a gender surgery to lead a normal married life with Virat and also to get accepted by his family members. When Angel learns about this, she manages to escape from the jail and brutally wounds both Virat and Heer throwing them into a river. They are presumed dead even though their bodies weren't found.
Angel wants to become a Guruma, the leader of intersex community, which she succeeds becoming. Malika avoids getting killed by Angel's community and visits Soumya, who is revealed to be alive, begging her to return home to save her family. Soumya left the family feeling it was the best for their happiness, but now accepts to return. She promises to protect Heer from anyone who plans to ruin her life. When Angel tries to hurt Harak's family, Soumya arrives and sends her off. Soumya reunites with family, who accepts her back, but clashes with Mahi. Harman also returns and reunites with family after convincing them that he's the same Harman, even though his face has changed (because of the accident, he needed to do a face surgery). Harman saved Soumya from Angel's hired killer Jeet, but soon Angel kidnaps Soumya and keeps Harman's family hostage. Then, Harman and Virat save Soumya and later Harman, Virat and Soumya save Heer. Angel is arrested, same as her accomplice Daljeet.
Virat and Heer reunite and marry again. Parmeet pretends to accept Heer, while in reality she still hates her and plots to separate her from Virat. However, her plans failed. Virat and Heer's college life resumes. Heer initially feels threatened by guy named Guru, who later befriends her and starts liking her. Soon, he learns that Virat and Heer are married. One day, Heer brings girl Gitu to hire her as a housekeeper but Gitu gets assaulted by Virat's older brother Daljeet who returned from jail.
Raavi accepts Balwinder back, but he cheats on her and the family by getting their property. Later, he intends to kill Raavi, which forces Soumya to kill him. Heer fights for Gitu's justice, but the two get kidnapped by Parmeet, Daljeet, Kareena and Sant Baksh.
Soumya finds a video of Heer's abduction. She, Virat and Harman team to save Heer. Soumya traps Kareena, who escapes but gets hit by a speeding car and is hospitalised. Before dying, she reveals that Parmeet killed Heer, and Daljeet and Sant Baksh shot Gitu and her father to death. Enraged, Soumya and Harman confront Parmeet. They decide to take revenge and capture Sant Baksh, Parmeet and Daljeet at the same place where Heer was murdered. The trio accepts their crimes and gets arrested. Parmeet tries to shoot Soumya, but Virat takes the bullet and eventually survives. Chintu returns to torture Harak's family, while Ravi tries to bring him on the right path.
Preeto and Soumya save a baby from being buried alive and take her to the hospital. There, doctor reveals that the baby is a intersex. Angel returns and intends to take the baby, but Soumya strongly opposes her. Preeto and Soumya bring the baby to their house with a decision to adopt her, which is supported by many family members.
Angel comes to Soumya's house in disguise and takes the baby away deceitfully. Chintu is involved with her in this act. However, Soumya learns this and informs family. They manage to stop Chintu and Angel, and take the baby back. When Angel almost falls down the cliff, Soumya saves her with Virat and Harman's help. Angel feels ashamed of her deeds and hands herself over to the police, after asking family members for forgiveness. Chintu tries to shoot Soumya, but is shot by police. At that moment, he sees Preeto and Soumya's love and affection for him and he finally repents.
Series Finale
In the end, Preeto names the baby Shagun. Soumya fills the adoption papers and promises to protect Shagun from the world and raise her by letting her know her identity. The family is reunited and the show ends on a happy note.
