Montenegro in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

Montenegro is set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. In October 2021, the Montenegrin public broadcaster Radio and Television of Montenegro (RTCG) announced that the country's representative will be determined via an internal selection.

Prior to the 2022 contest, Montenegro has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest as an independent nation eleven times since its first entry in 2007.[2] The nation's best placing in the contest is 13th, which they achieved in 2015 with the song "Adio" performed by Knez. In 2014, Montenegro qualified to the final for the first time since they began participating and have since featured in the final twice. The nation briefly withdrew from the competition between 2010 and 2011 citing financial difficulties.[3][4]

The country has opted for various national selection methods since 2007. RTCG organised an internal selection in 2009 and between 2012–2017, and a national final in 2007 and 2008 (MontenegroSong), as well as in 2018 and 2019 (Montevizija). In 2019, Montenegro failed to qualify to the final, placing 16th in the first semi-final with the song "Heaven" performed by D mol.

The country, while initially confirming its participation, later pulled out of the 2020 edition and confirmed its absence in 2021 as well.

Before Eurovision

Internal selection

On 12 October 2021, RTCG confirmed its participation in the 2022 contest.[5] Shortly after, Ivan Maksimović, Montevizija 2019 host and editor-in-chief for the broadcaster, announced that they would not return to a national final out of concern for its costs and for the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for an internal selection instead.[6]

On 28 October 2021, the rules and requirements for artists to take part in the selection were published and the submissions opened until 10 December 2021. Entries may be entered from any country by people holding Montenegrin citizenship, and have to be entered anonymously, with the artists' identities to be inspected only after the first selection round.[7][8]

The full selection process and dates are as yet undisclosed,[7] however it is known each competing entry can score up to 50 points for its composition, 30 for its lyrics, and 20 for its "production potential", adding up to a maximum total of 100 points.[7][8]

At Eurovision

According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big 5" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) splits up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot.
