Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

Germany is set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. German broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) will organise a national final in March 2022 in order to select its entry to the contest.

Prior to the 2022 contest, Germany has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 64 times since its debut as one of seven countries to take part in the inaugural contest.[1] Germany has won the contest on two occasions: in 1982 with the song "Ein bißchen Frieden" performed by Nicole and in 2010 with "Satellite" by Lena. Germany has been noted for having competed in the contest more than any other country; they have competed in every contest since the first edition in 1956 except for the 1996 contest when the nation was eliminated in a preliminary elimination round. In 2021, the German entry "I Don't Feel Hate" performed by Jendrik placed 25th of 26 finalists with a total of 3 points – all from two juries – coming second to last for the second edition in a row.

The German national broadcaster, ARD, broadcasts the event within Germany and delegates the selection of the nation's entry to a regional broadcaster, usually Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). In 2022, NDR is organising a national final for the first time since 2019.[2]

Before Eurovision

In March 2021, NDR confirmed the country's participation at Eurovision 2022,[3] with the delegation later releasing announcements hinting at a change of pace in the German selection after the poor results obtained in their latest participations.[4] On 3 November 2021, ARD radio station Bayern 3 revealed a national final will be organised in March 2022, with the involvement of various pop-focused radio channels forming part of ARD, i.e. Bayern 3 itself, Antenne Brandenburg, Bremen 4, hr3, MDR Jump, NDR 2, SR 1, SWR 3 and WDR 2. The show has been provisionally titled (Unser) Lied für Turin ("[Our] Song for Turin"), similarly to the country's most recent selection formats (namely the ones used between 2010 and 2020).[2][5][6] Between 20 and 23 April 2022, after a one-year stop, the broadcaster will also resume its online "Song Check" series, where hosts Alina Stiegler and Stefan Spiegel will comment on the competing entries.[7]

On 4 November 2021, NDR opened a public submission window – without any special requirements of genre, language, nationality or experience – for all those interested in representing Germany at Eurovision 2022 to apply with a song, with the deadline set for 30 November 2021. After that, the entries will be assessed within December by a professional jury, consisting of German head of delegation Alexandra Wolfslast and five music experts from the aforementioned radio stations. 25 to 30 of them will first be shortlisted, ultimately coming down to five contestants taking part in the national final in March 2022. There, the winner will be determined by a public televote open both on the radio and TV broadcasters and online.[2][5][6][8][9]

At Eurovision

The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will take place at the PalaOlimpico in Turin, Italy, and will consist of two semi-finals held on 10 and 12 May, and the grand final on 14 May 2022. According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exception of the host country and the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. As a member of the "Big Five", Germany automatically qualifies to compete in the final.[10] In addition to their participation in the final, Germany is also required to broadcast and vote in one of the two semi-finals.
