Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

Finland will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. The Finnish broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle) will organise the national final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022 in order to select the Finnish entry for the contest.

Prior to the 2022 contest, Finland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifty-four times since its first entry in 1961. Finland has won the contest once in 2006 with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah" performed by Lordi. In the 2021 contest, "Dark Side" by Blind Channel managed to qualify the country to the final, ultimately placing sixth.

The Finnish national broadcaster, Yleisradio (Yle), broadcasts the event within Finland and organises the selection process for the nation's entry. Yle confirmed their intentions to participate at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 on 24 May 2021, immediately after the 2021 final.[1] Finland's entries for the Eurovision Song Contest have been selected through national final competitions that have varied in format over the years. Between 1961 and 2011, a selection show that was often titled Suomen euroviisukarsinta highlighted that the purpose of the program was to select a song for Eurovision. However, since 2012, the broadcaster has organised the selection show Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), which focuses on showcasing new music with the winning song being selected as the Finnish Contest entry for that year. Along with their participation confirmation, the broadcaster also announced that the Finnish entry for the 2022 contest would be selected through UMK 2022.[1]

Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022

Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2022 is set to be the eleventh edition of the music competition that selects Finland's entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. The competition will consist of a final on 26 February 2022 at Logomo in Turku.[2] The exact format is yet to be announced, but it is known a combination of televoting and jury voting will be used to determine the winner.[3]

Competing entries

Upon announcing UMK 2022, Yle released the rules for entrants to submit their song and that the submission period would be open between 1 and 6 September 2021.[1] At least one of the writers and the lead singer(s) had to hold Finnish citizenship or live in Finland permanently in order for the entry to qualify to compete.[4][5]

A panel of experts chaired by Tapio Hakanen, Head of Music at YleX, selected the seven finalists out of 312 received submissions. The competing artists are expected to be announced on 12 January 2022, after which the competing songs should be released on a daily basis starting on 13 January.[3]

At Eurovision

According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big 5" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) splits up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot.
