Ukrainian orthography of 1960

The Ukrainian orthography of 1960 (Ukrainian: Український правопис 1960 року, romanized: Ukrainskyi pravopys 1960 roku) is the second, corrected and supplemented edition of the new Ukrainian orthography,[1] where the rules of Ukrainian spelling and punctuation were more fully and consistently stated. Orthography remained unchanged for more than thirty years before the 1990-1993 reform.

The Ukrainian orthography of 1960 was finally approved by a commission consisting of Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Bulakhovskyi (chairman), Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Mykola Bazhan, Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Bilodid, Kundzich, Academician Maksym Rylskyi and Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Pavlo Tychyna, which was appointed by the Presidium expediency of corrections made to the "Ukrainian orthography" in connection with its reprint.

Prerequisites for creation

The precondition for the creation of the Ukrainian orthography in 1960 was the publication of the Rules of Russian Orthography and Punctuation (Russian: Правила русской орфографии и пунктуации, romanized: Pravila russkoy orfografii i punktuatsii) in 1956. The practice of using Ukrainian orthography of 1946 revealed some differences in the spelling of punctuation marks, words together, separately and through a hyphen, and others. inconsistencies in spelling points common to Ukrainian and Russian languages.[2] A new edition of the 1960 spelling was intended to eliminate these differences, which were considered undesirable in the parallel study of both languages.[3]

Differences from the orthography of 1946

The above-mentioned commission reviewed the illustrative material and added a glossary. Also, the preface to the spelling of 1960 indicates the innovations of this edition, namely, it is specified:

There is no letter "ґ" in the "Ukrainian orthography" of the 1960 edition. Borys Antonenko-Davydovych advocated its return to the Ukrainian alphabet in 1969.[5] Orthography issues were widely discussed in the pages of the journal "Ukrainian Language and Literature at School" during 1963-1964.

In the 1960 edition, the words торф'яний and черв'як were added to the rules for using the apostrophe in the illustration.[6]
