Chapar, Nagorno-Karabakh

Chapar (Armenian: Չափար; Azerbaijani: Çapar) is a village de facto in the Martakert Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, de jure in the Kalbajar District of Azerbaijan. The village has an ethnic Armenian-majority population, and also had an Armenian majority in 1989.[2]

History

During the Soviet period, the village was a part of the Mardakert District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.

Historical heritage sites

Close to the village is the old settlement of Hin Chapar (Old Chapar) dating from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries, the 12th/13th century Karmir Kar Monastery, the Sorpen Duz Chapel built in 1273, a fortress dating from the period between the 9th and 13th centuries, a cemetery and khachkars from the 12th and 13th centuries, and the medieval Ojakh shrine.[1]

Economy and culture

The population is mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. As of 2015, the village has a municipal building, a secondary school, a kindergarten, two shops and a medical centre.[1]

The village had 252 inhabitants in 2005,[3] and 355 inhabitants in 2015.[1]
