The song was performed eleventh on the night, following Ireland's Jump the Gun with "Take Him Home" and preceding Austria's Wilfried with "Lisa Mona Lisa". At the close of voting, it had received 48 points, placing 14th in a field of 21.
The song, written and composed by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger, is a piano-led ballad, with the duo dedicating a "simple and plainspoken" song to a friend – as these are the qualities that he has as well. Maxi & Chris Garden also recorded the song in English (as "Song for a Friend") and French ("Chant pour un ami").
It was succeeded as German representative at the 1989 contest by Nino de Angelo with "Flieger".
