I Can See Your Voice Malaysia is a Malaysian Malay-language television mystery music game show series on TV3. It is an adaptation of the South Korean programme of the same name.

Gameplay

Format

A guest artist is presented with a group of six "mystery singers" — some of them are good singers, and some are bad. The artist must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group by guessing who they are without hearing them sing. They get assistance from clues by "celebrity panelists" over the course of three rounds. The artist will eliminate one to two singers at the end of each round and then proceeding to perform on the "stage of truth". At the end, the winning mystery singer is revealed as good or bad by means of a duet with one of the guest artists.[1][2]

Rewards

The winning mystery singer is awarded on the following conditions:

  • If the last mystery singer is a good singer,
    • In the first two seasons, he/she will perform again in the post-season showcase episode.
    • In the third season, he/she will have chance for a potential contract and a single under Monkey Bone Records and Warner Music Malaysia.
  • If the last mystery singer is a bad singer, he/she wins a prize of RM3,000.

Rounds

There are six individuals of mystery singers standing on a platform to keep identities concealed until the "stage of truth" performance.

  • Visual round

The guest artist is given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance. Afterward, a muted video of each mystery singer that reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice is played as an additional hint.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

Each mystery singer is given two different identities — as a good singer and as a bad singer. Only one of them is their real identity.[lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]

  • Lip sync round

Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song. Good singers mime to their own voices while bad singers mime to the voices of others.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2]

The mystery singer lip syncs to the good singer's voice, then the bad singer's voice comes in the middle of the performance.[lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]

  • Evidence round

A proof of each mystery singer's singing ability (i.e. photo, video, certificates, etc.) is shown on the screen.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3]

The hosts have randomly assigned clues about the mystery singer. The guest artist must choose a clue for each mystery singer.[lower-alpha 3]

  • Rehearsal round

Three random panelists must wear headphones to listen to the mystery singer's real voice for 15 seconds. Afterward, the panelist must defend the mystery singer and convince the guest artist to choose him/her as the final mystery singer.[lower-alpha 1][lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 4]

Production

Background and development

Media Prima Berhad first announced the development of the series in June 2018. Produced by Primeworks Studios, the staff team is managed by executive producer Mas Ayu Binti Ali and director Lucent Chong.[3]

Filming

Episode tapings took place at Sri Pentas Studio 2, based at Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam, Selangor and began in 22 June 2018. Since the third season, it was taped with enhanced health and safety protocols being implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4][5][6]

Broadcast

History

ICSYVMY debuted on NTV7 on 4 August 2018.[7][8] As the show made their transition to TV3 since the third season, the second season began airing on 23 June 2019.[9][10] For the third season, there are two separate broadcasts — the first part premiered on 16 February 2020,[11][12] followed by an extended second part on 21 June 2020.[13][14] Regular episodes for the fourth season began airing on 23 May 2021.[15][16] After the finale, the series has been renewed for the fifth season premiering on 2022.[17]

Special episodes

Until the second season, the Encore Concert is a post-season showcase episode when winning good singers alongside guest singers perform one last time.[18] Since the third season, it was replaced by digital-based Online Concert, in which one winner is granted an exclusive recording contract and a single.[19] Eid al-Fitr-themed special episodes were aired in two occasions — the third season was played by Ramlah Ram[20] and the fourth season was played by returning guest artists Floor 88.[15][21]

Cast

The series employs a team of "celebrity panelists" who decipher mystery singers' evidences throughout the game. Guest panelists also appear since the first season. Throughout its broadcast, the programme has assigned 6 different panelists. The original members consist of Mark Adam, Jihan Muse, and Seelan Paul. Besides with original lineup, newcomers also include Yusry Abdul Halim (from third season); and Fad Bocey and Alif Satar (from fourth season).

Sean Lee and Shuk Sahar host the programme. Alvin Chong hosted entirely in the inaugural first season.
