Teams
Consistent with conference tie-ins, the game will be played between teams from the Mountain West Conference (MWC) and the American Athletic Conference (AAC or "The American").
This will be the first time Memphis and Hawaii have ever played each other.[2]
Memphis Tigers
Memphis completed their regular season with a 6–6 record, 3–5 in conference play. After winning their first three games, falling to 3–3 and then 5–6, the Tigers defeated Tulane on November 27 to become bowl-eligible. On November 29, Memphis accepted an invitation to the Hawaii Bowl.[3] This is the first Hawaii Bowl appearance for the Tigers.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Hawaii compiled a 6–7 record during the regular season, going 3–5 in conference games. After playing to a 4–7 record, the Rainbow Warriors won their final two games, against Colorado State and Wyoming, to become conditionally bowl-eligible with six wins. On December 2, Hawaii was announced as the bowl opponent for Memphis after the NCAA agreed to add an extra bowl game to the schedule.[4] The team officially accepted the bid on December 3, 2021.[5] The Rainbow Warriors have made nine prior appearances in the Hawaii Bowl, accruing a 5–4 record.

Hawaii is an alternate ahead of any 5-7 teams because it participated in 13 regular-season contests and finished the season with six wins that count toward meeting the definition of a 'deserving team.'
