Mikulovice (Jeseník District)

Mikulovice (German: Niklasdorf, Polish: Mikułowice) is a municipality and village in Jeseník District in the Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic, located in the north-eastern part of the country, on the border with Poland. It has about 2,500 inhabitants.

Mikulovice lies approximately 11 kilometres (7 mi) north-east of Jeseník, 79 km (49 mi) north of Olomouc, and 208 km (129 mi) east of Prague.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1263, when it was part of fragmented Piast-ruled Poland. As a result of further fragmentation it became part of the Duchy of Nysa, which later on passed under Bohemian (Czech) suzerainty, and following the duchy's dissolution in 1850, it was incorporated directly into Bohemia. Following World War I, from 1918, it formed part of Czechoslovakia, and from 1938 to 1945 it was occupied by Germany as part of the so-called Sudetenland. During World War II, the Germans operated several forced labour subcamps of the Stalag VIII-B/344 prisoner-of-war camp in the village.[2]
